Commentary:
Kunlun is an extremely important
point for treating pain anywhere along the Urinary
Bladder channel. Running the entire length of the
body, from the eye, over the head, down the back,
the legs and the feet to end at the little toe, the
UB channel is the longest of all the channels and
has the most points (67). It is the most yang of all
the channels, which is reinforced by the fact it runs
down the back or Yang aspect of the body.
Kunlun has a very strong descending
action. This pulling downward of Qi and Yang
makes it an extremely important point for treating
pain and stiffness all along the channel. The axiom,
'for disharmony above, needle below applies well to
Kunlun.
Kunlun is the distal point
of choice for occipital headache, but it also has
a strong action on any kind of headache.
Often paired with Houxi (Small
Intestine 3), it is extremely important in the treatment
of pain and stiffness all along the back. Needle Kunlun
and Houxi, while the patient is standing
or sitting and ask the patient to slowly rotate from
the hip. Often, there is movement within a few minutes.
Its strong downward action makes it
a point of choice to induce labour in difficult pregnancies,
alleviate pain, and to promote the expulsion of the
placenta. For this reason it is normally contraindicated
in pregnancy.
Finally, Kunlun is listed among
the Twelve Heavenly Star
points, considered the 12 most important points in
Acupuncture, by the famous physician of the Jin
Dynasty, Ma Dan-yang.
In this listing it is specifically indicated for severe
Lumbar and upper back pain and contraction.
