Commentary

Fuliu is the point of choice for regulating urination and to control sweating. By strengthening the Kidney's function of dominating fluds, Fuliu is the point of choice for all types of Edema, especially in the lower part of the body and limbs.

Fuliu is able to either induce sweating as a defence against invasion of external pathogenic factors (colds, flu etc.), or to stop sweating when it becomes a pathology itself. It is also indicated to treat night sweats due to Yin deficiency.

The Kidneys and the Lungs have special relationship. The Lungs are assisted in their function of breathing in Qi by the Kidneys reaching up, grasping and pulling down Qi. breathlessness is a sign of Kidney deficiency. The Lungs are responsible for the skin and defensive Qi on the surface of the body. Defensive or Wei Qi, is the first line of defense against invasion from the exterior. Yuan or original Qi, which resides in the Kidneys, is the source of Wei Qi and Wei Qi's ability to properly defend the body is correspondingly dependent on relative strength of the Kidneys.

It is said that Wei Qi originates in the Lower Jiao (Kidneys, Urinary Bladder), gathers in Middle Jiao (Spleen/Stomach) and emanates from the Upper Jiao (Heart/Lungs).

Fuliu is also indicated for some types of bleeding including blood in the urine, bloody stool, bleeding hemorrhoids, nosebleed, and uterine bleeding.

By virtue of its ability to strengthen the Kidneys and move water, Fuliu is indicated for various bladder disorders including urinary urgency, frequent, and painful urination.

Finally, Fuliu is indicated for dry tongue and parched mouth not only because it can move water, but because the Kidney channel itself ascends to the root of the tongue.
