Commentary:
Shen means
'Spirit'. Que refers to
the tower over a city gate within which sentries keep
watch. This point is also known as Qishe
(abode of Qi) and Qihe
(joining of Qi). These different names indicate the
idea of the umbilicus as the entry point of 'spirit'
... that which is passed on from mother to child in
the form of foetal nourishment. To the Chinese nourishment
means far more than that which is for the body.
This idea is corroborated by the action
of this point in strongly rescuing Qi in
the cases of collapse due to extreme cold or shock.
If a body is to be revived, it is necessary to revive
the spirit.
