Commentary:

The Small Intestine Channel is interiorly-exteriorly related to the Heart Channel. It is also the confluent point of the Du Channel. As well, it is the Shu Stream point of the Small Intestine Channel.

As the Shu Stream or Fire point of the channel it is specifically indicated for clearing heat along the length of the channel and recommended for Febrile diseases (diseases that include Fever as a symptom).

While it is generally accepted that the Heart is the residence of Spirit in TCM theory, the Brain is also seen by some to have an equal claim on that distinction. TCM, generally has little problem accommodating these divergent views. Houxi, being both related to the Heart, and the confluent point of the Du Channel, which enters directly into the brain is a point of choice to calm the spirit, either way. Specifically, Houxi is indicated for both Epilepsy, and Mania-Depression.

Finally, Houxi is a most important point for treating pain and stiffness all along the length of both the Small Intestine and Du Channels. It is an essential distal point for Occipital headache, but is used for other types of headaches well. It is also important for treating pain along the spinal column from the scapula region to the lumbar region. Houxi (SI 3) combined with Kunlun (UB 60), is a potent combination for pain and stiffness of the lower back.
