About 10 years ago I started out with a desire to share my journey. I wasn't even sure at the time that it was worth sharing, but I put the doubts aside and designed my first website. In those days there were a few web hosting companies starting up and offering free websites to anyone who wanted one. I put up a site on every one. While most of them fell by the wayside I at least got quite a lot of experience designing webpages and getting a handle on the technology. As well, I got to know myself better and how to present myself on the web. Over the years I visited many many sites on line, gathering information and ideas. About 5 years ago I met Charm. She also was on her journey. At the time she had her own recording company and did income tax returns. She had a dream that one day she would design websites for a living and had committed herself to learning as much as she could about it. We met one day at a health fair. She had been to my site and asked if she could practice some of what she was learning on my site. I readily agreed. The current site has grown and gone through several incarnations in the meantime. Like the serpent, the traditional symbol of re-birth, it has shed its skin several times, and continues to grow and prosper. Charm and I have become great friends as well as professional colleagues. We decided that since I had quite a lot to say, the site should be information based and user friendly. User Friendly means easy on the eye, soft colours, pictures to break up the text, the occasional animation, and lots of links so the visitor doesn't get lost in a maze, like some sites I have been to. Up to that point, I must confess, I had become obsessed with all the bells and whistles that the technology is capable of and I had something on every page. All that I accomplished was a site that was so 'busy' the information tended to get lost. As well, since I have a tendency to start talking and forget to stop, pages tended to run on long past anyone's attention span. So we decided short pages, with pictures, and only the occasional bell or whistle for effect. At the time I had been on the web for a while and was feeling
pretty good that my site was getting close to a 1,000 hits a month.
Today, my site gets over 150,000 hits a month and that number
is always going up. We have completely re-designed the site twice. I have added a store, a newsletter, and an 'Ask the Dragon' feature. I have designed 'interactive' pages so visitors can consult the I Ching, and 'The Wisdom of the Universe.' We have not done these things just for the sake of doing them either. Each time a new feature is added, the number of visitors increases substantially. I am telling you all this because this is the kind of attention to customer satisfaction that Charmweb offers.
