Shenshu / Kidney Shu

Shenshu is the 23rd point on Urinary Bladder Channel. It is the Back Shu point of the Kidneys. A Shu point is similar to a Mu point on the front. It is where the Qi of a particular organ gathers and collects and is a direct link with the organ. Shenshu is located aproximately 1 1/2" - 2" lateral to the spine at the level of the Second Lumbar Vertebra. Shenshu is one of the principal points on the body to tonify Yang, nourish Yin, benefit essence and strengthen the Kidneys which in turn has its effect on the whole body.

The list of indications for this point is extensive including both male and female urogenital problems, menstrual problems, digestive problems, deafness, tinnitus, night blindness, blurred vision, heavy head, redness and heat of the face, rebellious Qi, heart pain, pain and soreness of the lumbar region, cold legs, hot and cold sensations.

Shenshu is indicated for what are known as the 5 Taxations and 7 Injuries.

The 5 Taxations are;

1) Excessive use of the eyes taxes the blood.

2) Excessive lying down taxes the the Qi.

3) Excessive sitting taxes the flesh.

4) Excessive standing taxes the bones.

5) Excessive walking taxes the sinews.

The 7 injuries are;

1) Overeating injures the Spleen/Stomach.

2) Great Anger injures the Liver.

3. Heavey lifting or prolonged sitting on damp ground injures the Kidneys

4) Excessive cold injures the Lungs.

5) Worry and Anxiety injure the Heart.

6) Wind, Rain, Cold, & Summer Heat injure the body.

7) Excessive Fear injures the emotions.

So, this point can be used for any of the above noted taxations or injuries.

Low back pain, together with weakness or pain in the knees is a clear sign of Kidney deficiency. Developing phobias, being frightened easily, and ringing in the ears are other signs of Kidney deficiency.

The emotion of the Kidney is Fear. Stimulating this point will have the side effect of diminishing phobias and other fear based feelings.

So, from a Reiki perspective, this is an extremely important point to activate in the sense that it has a profound effect on the whole body as well as the emotions.

Mingmen / Gate of Life

Mingmen is the 4th point on the Du channel that runs directly up the spine. It is located directly below the spinous process of the Second Lumbar vertebra lateral to Shenshu and is intimately related to the Kidney point.

Mingmen is considered to be an access point of 'ministerial fire', or the fire that warms the body and has much in common with the Back Shu point of the Heart in this regard. In Acupuncture this point is indicated for deficiency conditions due to cold as it quite powerfully warms the body. If there is already heat in the body, though, it is best not to stimulate this point.

However, this point is also important in Qi Gong practice as being one of the 'passes' through which it is more difficult to circulate Qi in Circular breathing exercises. The other 'passes' or 'gates' (sanguan) are the Coccyx pass, the Lumbar pass, the Occipital pass (at the Occipital Protuberance) and in the area of Changqiang (between the anus and genitalia).

According to one source, this point and Shanzhong on the front are Reiki'd simultaneously strengthening the intimate link betwen the Kidney and Heart.
